Lisbon
- For our money, there’s no better way to see Lisbon than by hopping on a traditional tramcar. The historical tram takes you through some of the most famous neighborhoods and past many of the city’s best known monuments. It’s a truly authentic way to experience Lisbon and with a 24 hour validity, you have the flexibility to get on and off at your leisure.
- As soon as we finished a visit to the breathtaking church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, the skies opened up and it started to pour. We walked a few blocks and realized the storm wasn’t passing quickly. Lucky for us, we saw Antiga Wine Bar and popped in. Drenched from head to toe, our charming server offered us a much-appreciated mimosa. Then it was on to the food. With no idea of what was to come, we stayed with a standard eggs benedict and the plate was anything but standard. The freshest ingredients, a delicious hollandaise, side salad and a piece of avocado toast! If you’re looking for a great meal at affordable prices, this is the place. It was so good, we returned for dinner and had another great meal – with wine pairing!
- Lisbon has a lot of great hotels. But nothing quite compares with the new, luxury, boutique hotel Montebelo Vista Alegre. Located in charming Chiado, this five star property feels more like a private home than a hotel. Beautifully designed, the hotel is in walking distance to most of the city and has a bar that alone is worth a visit.
- Right around the corner from the Montebelo Vista Alegre is one of the great wine bars of Lisbon, By the Wine. Offering a wide range of wines from what seems like an endless wine list, you can enjoy a glass or a bottle of your choice. But don’t pass on the food, which features meat, seafood and vegan options. For us, it was a bottle of red, Callabriga from Douro and a plate of cheese and ham. The perfect way to enjoy the end of the day.
- If you don’t already know, Portugal, specifically Lisbon, is the world capital of….sardines!. Don’t scrunch your face! These are the finest of delicacies and you won’t believe how many options there are. The best of all shops is Silva & Feijoo. While they have shops all over the city, the best is the original, housed in an 18th century building near Casa dos Bicos. Since 1919 they’ve been offering a massive array of sardines as well as olive oil, port and more. The staff is amazing and helpful, and chances are, you’ll come away with more than you anticipated. Sardines also make great souvenirs!
- After several hours of walking, it was time for a coffee. We came upon Banana Café in the beautiful Praca do Municpio square. A simple kiosk with chairs and tables – and a great view, we enjoyed a café and traditional Pasteis de Nata (custard tart). We learned that there are several of these cafes around town, but locals told us this one is the best. And if you’re looking for the best happy hour in Lisbon, from 5PM – 8PM daily, this is the spot. Beer at 1.50e or two Aperol Spritz with chips at 16e. Prices that can’t be beat.
- Portugal has the best seafood, but after a few days, we were craving something else. A friend suggested RIB Beef & Wine located in the Pestana Pousada Lisboa. We sat at the bar and asked the mixologist for his favorite drink. He presented us with an incredible cocktail with rich ginger, clove and orange flavors. For dinner, we kept it simple with a delicious, RIB Burger. You’ll need reservations for indoor table dining, but our preference is the bar or tables outside on the terrace.
- Our initial reaction about visiting the Time Out Market was a hard pass. But a friend insisted so off we went. And we are so glad we were wrong! A food lovers heaven, there is more to see, smell and taste here than one can imagine. With endless dining options, bars, shops and music, this market is a must for any visitor. We ended up staying for over 3 hours!
- No trip to Lisbon is complete without a visit to the historic home of Portugal’s national drink, A Ginjinha. For almost 200 years, they’ve been home to the best ginjinha in the country. A liqueur made from ginja berries, alcohol and spices, this delicious – and powerful drink is served as shots, either in a short glass or in a small chocolate shot glass. But drink responsibly. You may not feel the full effect until you stand up!
- One of the best, authentic shopping experiences you can have in Lisbon is at ChiCoracao on the Rua Augusto Rosa. Beautifully made woolen items are the focus here, ranging from small lamb toys for children to clothing, housewares and their famous wraps and scarves. And while visiting, you have the added bonus of being in one of Lisbon’s loveliest neighborhoods, home of the Lisbon Cathedral and surrounded by cafes, shops and galleries.

Boy, was I wrong. To start with, I know enough to avoid the traps; book early, travel in the late spring/early summer, spend more than one night in Athens, fly rather…
