Europe Travel Guide bliss list
Rome
- The Doria Pamphilj Gallery: There are lots of museums and galleries to see in Rome, but one of the best, The Doria Pamphilj, is often overlooked by visitors. Housed in private palazzo (as it has been since the 15th century!) a visit here is more than a museum visit. You can tour the palazzo, explore the collection of furniture, visit the state rooms and family chapel and of course, see the art collection which includes works by Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio, Carracci and Velazquez.
2. St. Peter’s Tomb/The Vatican: Each year millions of tourists visit the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica. What most people don’t know is that right below their feet is a secret; the ancient Roman necropolis and the traditional tomb of St. Peter. Visiting here requires that you contact the Vatican Scavi Office for permission to visit. If you’re lucky, you will be one of only 250 visitors per day that are allowed this once in a lifetime experience.
3. Domus Aurea – Nero’s Golden House: After the Great Fire of Rome in AD64, you know, the one where it’s said Nero fiddled as the city burned, Nero cleared the land and built his dream, the Golden House. It’s awesome to step back in time to the private world of an emperor and even more so to do it right in the heart of the city. You can only get access to the site with a guided tour and like the Scavi Tour of the Vatican, do it as far in advance as possible.
4. Eternal Rome-The Food Tour: This historic food and wine tour takes visitors through three of Rome’s most iconic “authentic” neighborhoods; Campo de Fiori, the area of the former Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere. You’ll taste pasta, enjoy real gelato, try a cherry ricotta cake, try a porchetta sandwich and sample local wines.
5. NOTOS Rooftop: High above the city, at the Six Senses Hotel is one of the best rooftop venues anywhere in Europe. Designed to feel like an urban garden, you’ll be surrounded by terra cotta pots of beautiful plants and herbs and the most breathtaking views of the Eternal City. And the cocktails and food match the incredible atmosphere.
6. Sketching Tour: For art lovers and artists both, this tour takes you to some of the most sketch worthy sites in the city. The expert instructor will share the history of the locations and guide you through the sketching process, with your very own, handmade sketch book. Beginners and experts alike are welcome.
7. Old Frascati Food & Wine: If you’re looking for a quick break from the energy of Rome, make a visit to Frascati and book a wine tasting tour with Old Frascati Food & Wine. Just a short train ride from the city, you’ll find yourself on a hill, with views to of the city in the distance, where you can enjoy local food and wine in a truly Italian setting – without the crowds!
8. Fortunato al Pantheon: Located just steps from the Pantheon, sits one of Rome’s best, family owned and operated restaurants. The young team (all under 40 years old) create some of the best food in the city, from classic Italian plates to more modern, innovative choices. They also have a great wine list. It’s so good, that it seems everyone has tasted their food including, King Charles III, Sarah Jessica Parker and Bill Clinton. Remember to book your table in advance.
9. Rome Scavenger Hunt: This one is for the kids! If you’re bringing kids (recommended for ages 6 – 12), you’ll want to see the main sites including the Colosseum, Forum, and the Palatine Hill. On this tour, your guide takes you to all of them, but with a twist. A scavenger hunt designed to keep the young ones engaged and excited – and grown-ups will like it too.
10. Unlock The Sistine Chapel: Imagine arriving to the Sistine Chapel, early in the morning, before the city awakens. You’ll meet the Vatican Key Master and witness the opening of the chapel, well before the crowds begin pouring in. You’ll have a few, private moments in the chapel, followed by two private hours inside the museums. A true bucket list experience.
